The Dubai Metro is one of the best public transport systems in the world. It is spotlessly clean, fully air-conditioned, fast, and remarkably affordable. For tourists, it is an excellent way to get between major attractions without the cost of taxis or the stress of traffic. This guide tells you everything you need to know about using the Dubai Metro.

The Two Main Metro Lines

  • Red Line: The longer of the two lines, passing through the airport terminals, Union, BurJuman, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, and JBR. This is the most useful line for tourists.
  • Green Line: A shorter line through older parts of the city including Deira and Bur Dubai. Key stations include Al Fahidi (for Old Dubai and Dubai Museum) and Al Ghubaiba (for the creek and Spice Souk).

The Nol Card: Your Metro Ticket

To use the Dubai Metro, you need a Nol card — a rechargeable smart card that you tap in and out at metro stations. The Red Nol Card costs AED 25 (including AED 19 credit) and is available at all metro stations. Top up at any ticket machine in any station. The machines accept cash and cards and are available in multiple languages.

Metro Fares

  • 1 to 2 zones: AED 3.00
  • 3 to 4 zones: AED 5.00
  • 5 or more zones: AED 7.50
  • Gold Class upgrade: AED 4.00 extra on top of the standard fare
  • Children under five: Free

Special Carriages

  • Gold Class carriage: The first carriage of each train, marked in gold. More spacious and quieter. Requires a Gold fare.
  • Women and Children carriage: The last carriage of each train, reserved exclusively for women and children under 10. Men are not permitted.

Key Stations for Tourists

  • Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall: For the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain, and Dubai Opera.
  • Al Fahidi (Green Line): For the Dubai Museum and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
  • Al Ghubaiba (Green Line): For the Spice Souk, abra crossing, and Bur Dubai waterfront.
  • Dubai Marina/DMCC: For Dubai Marina Walk, JBR Beach, and The Walk.
  • Mall of the Emirates: For Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai.
  • Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 3: Direct airport connections.

Tips for Using the Dubai Metro

  • Validate your Nol card by tapping it clearly on the reader at entry and exit barriers.
  • Eating and drinking (including water) is strictly prohibited on the metro — fines apply.
  • The metro does not run 24 hours — on weeknights the last train is around midnight.
  • Peak hours (8 to 10am and 5 to 8pm) are busy — travel outside these hours when possible.
  • Download the RTA Dubai app for real-time train information and journey planning.

Final Thoughts

The Dubai Metro is one of the best things about getting around this city. It is reliable, affordable, and takes you directly to most of the major tourist areas. Dubai Travel Club recommends picking up a Nol card on your first day and using the metro as your primary way of getting around. Combined with the occasional taxi for places the metro does not reach, it will serve you very well throughout your stay.
